Living With a Substance Use Disorder: How an Inpatient Treatment Center Can Help

Take a Virtual Tour of Serenity Lane's Coburg Campus

Have you ever wondered what a residential treatment center, is like?

Residential treatment provides a controlled environment with around-the-clock medical and mental support. This helps clients ‘detox’ (detoxification) and get an individually tailored treatment plan.

Living With a Substance Use Disorder

All patients are initially admitted to our specialty center within the treatment center. At this time the medical staff carefully monitors patients to ensure a safe withdrawal from alcohol and/or drugs. This process is known as detox.

Following detox at Serenity Lane, the nursing staff, physicians, psychiatrists, mental health professionals, and counselors work together to develop an individualized treatment plan for each client. The client then enters the residential program.

Our treatment center has a lot to offer. In addition to medically supported withdrawal (detox), we provide clinical assessments, mental health evaluations, and support for co-occurring disorders.

Who Should Consider Residential Inpatient Care Centers?

A residential treatment center is typically the first stage of getting treatment for a substance use disorder. It helps the client get off of the substance and begin an intensive treatment plan that requires the client to stay at the facility for a certain amount of time. At Serenity Lane, this averages somewhere between 30 and 60 days. However, this may vary based on individual treatment needs and financial resources.

Do you think your loved one might need to start the process of recovery? Here are some of the signs that they may have a substance use disorder:

  • Regular substance use
  • Cravings for the substance
  • Developing a tolerance
  • Using more of the substance for longer than expected
  • Always having a stock of the substance
  • Neglecting school and work responsibilities or social plans
  • Continuing use even with negative consequences
  • Risky behaviors

If this sounds like you or a loved one, it’s time to consider a residential treatment center.

How Addiction Works

In general, residential treatment programs are the most intensive form of care and help you or a loved one begin the road to recovery.

There is a set schedule throughout the week. However, the weekend schedule varies based on the client’s length of stay and to accommodate the family program.

Our family program incorporates education, therapy, and support to rebuild family relationships and communication. The first part of the program focuses on education, then moves into family systems and communication. One of the most popular parts of this program is when the family gets to write letters to each other.

Other benefits that clients receive during inpatient treatment include:

  • An assigned counselor to work with during the stay. The counselor’s clients make up the group that meets together twice daily. This is known as group therapy.
  • An assigned “buddy” with another member of the group
  • Closely working with our patient advocate to maximize benefits
  • Lectures from staff and alumni, readings, and discussion groups

What Support and Care Comes After Treatment at a Residential Inpatient Rehabilitation?

You may be wondering what comes after you or a loved one’s stay at our residential treatment center. As clients return to their homes and daily lives, including work or school, continued treatment can be important for some to maintain recovery.

Following the stay at a residential treatment center, the client has even more treatment options to sustain recovery, including day treatmentintensive outpatient program (IOP), outpatient treatment program (OP), and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). You can learn the differences between inpatient and outpatient treatment here.

Day treatment, or partial hospitalization, occurs after the patient returns home and goes back to their daily lives. It involves five to seven days of programming a week for up to six hours a day.

IOPs are a continuation of the recovery process and are offered to clients completing all components of their prescribed treatment. Over the course of ten weeks, treatment groups meet three times a week for three hours.

Our other outpatient treatment program provides a flexible schedule while incorporating individualized treatment. It involves an hour and a half meeting weekly to develop coping skills for recovery.

MAT programs use FDA-approved medications and clinical therapies to treat substance use disorders.

Overall, a residential treatment center allows clients to get off substances and start an individualized treatment program. There is constant support from many different professionals during the client’s stay. The residential treatment center has many benefits, including education, support, therapy, and family involvement.

Residential Treatment Center FAQs

What is residential treatment?

Residential treatment, also known as rehab or inpatient treatment, is a live-in program. The purpose is to get those struggling with a substance use disorder the help they need for lasting recovery. Residential treatment involves detox, group and/or individual therapy, education, and more.

Is residential treatment considered inpatient?

Yes. Residential treatment is also known as inpatient treatment. They both mean that clients live at a facility for a specified amount of time and receive services intended to detox clients and form individualized treatment plans.

What are the three types of residential and day treatment programs?

Care typically starts with a residential (or inpatient) treatment program which involves living at the facility. After inpatient treatment, clients can transition to a day treatment program. Day programs involve programming for five to seven days of the week for up to six hours a day. Then, clients can transition to an outpatient program that involves less programming time than day treatment. However, different outpatient programs have varying amounts of programming.

How long do you stay in residential treatment?

The amount of time someone stays in residential treatment depends on the facility, the individual’s treatment needs, and financial resources.

Residential Treatment Centers are typically the first step in getting you or a loved one with a substance use disorder clean and ready for recovery. At Serenity Lane, we offer a wide range of services to ensure that our clients get an individualized treatment program. We also have many options for care after inpatient treatment in order to provide support along the journey of recovery. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, give us a call at 800-543-9905.
